Rainy Elopement in Summit County Colorado | Rachael and Alex

Looking at Rachael and Alex’s summer elopement in Summit County, Colorado has me second guessing if we were ACTUALLY in Colorado or the PNW! This rainy day brought all the moody vibes with a hint of Twilight (with less angsty vampires and more love and smiles)!

A Rainy and Moody Elopement in Summit County, Colorado

An elopement in the Colorado mountains can sometimes throw us curveballs. In general, we’re always planning for a sunny day. There are times though when rain clouds roll in and we make a decision on how to adjust. Luckily Rachael and Alex were ALL about going with the flow here. It was raining really hard until they showed up. They immediately hopped out of their car and started getting ready in the now light drizzle. Alex put on his perfectly emerald green wedding suit outside his car. Meanwhile Rachael stepped in the changing tent to throw on her stunning off the shoulder, long sleeve lacey dress. Rachael also kept on her hiking boots to keep it comfortable for the day!

Their first look and vows took place along the waterfront underneath clear umbrellas - which was such a perfect vibe against the pine trees and mountains. Eventually the rain cleared up and we ditched the umbrellas to enjoy some cake - woo!

Enjoying Berry Chantilly Cake and Popping Champagne to Celebrate!

Rachael and Alex bought an ICONIC berry chantilly cake from Whole Foods and some champagne to enjoy after officially tying the knot. Really, is there even a better way to celebrate their elopement in the Colorado mountains? It was so perfect and serene.

We then hiked around a bit for some portraits along the water and caught some beautiful clouds rolling past the mountains! Rachael's emerald ring and colorful bouquet only added to how effortlessly everything fell into place this day.

Tips for Rain on Your Wedding Day in the Mountains From a Colorado Wedding Photographer

Rain on your wedding or elopement day is usually not *ideal* but it does happen! And when you’re getting married in the Colorado mountains, the weather can change pretty quickly! So it’s important to have an alternate plan in case you end up with some sprinkles:

  • Pack some umbrellas! Clear is usually best to allow light to filter through onto your face. Plus you’ll be able to still get married outside and bounce around for portraits. You can also plan to bring a raincoat or poncho to layer up and protect the fit! Take a look at this article for some additional emergency items you might need

  • Bring some hiking boots. It may get muddy, it may be wet. If you’re wanting to move around, come prepared with waterproof footwear that you’re comfortable hiking in.

  • Be flexible. Whether this means getting married in the rain or pivoting to a new location, be prepped to slightly change plans if needed. Remember that the most important thing is that you’re marrying your person!

It’s always fun to get to photograph rainy elopement day! The lighting is so perfectly diffused, the greens and blues of the mountains really pop, and we get a little bit more moody vibes which create some really beautiful moments! Rachael and Alex had the best suit and dress to match this day and I’m so happy they traveled out to Colorado and trusted me for such a meaningful moment!
