Winter Elopement in the San Juan Mountains | Delia and Scott

Delia and Scott chose to have their wedding ceremony on Valentine’s Day in Ouray, one of my favorite mountain towns! They chose a cute Airbnb in Ridgway to get ready in and spend the morning together.  They took their time getting ready before we headed out to their ceremony spot along the Million Dollar Highway.  This spot in the San Juan Mountains is a gorgeous location for a ceremony so we spent some time taking portraits following their ceremony as well.

Winter Elopement in San Juan Mountains

When inquiring with me, Delia and Scott knew they wanted beautiful winter mountain views for their wedding, so I knew the San Juan Mountains would be the perfect spot.  The San Juan Mountains are truly perfect for an elopement no matter what season, and I’m so glad these two trust me to help guide them to a location that felt just right.

We had gotten a fresh dusting of snow the night before so it was truly a winter wonderland, the fresh snow paired with a stunning blue bird day made for something pretty special for these two.

How to Plan a Winter Elopement in the San Juan Mountains

If you’re planning a winter elopement in the San Juan Mountains, here are some of my top tips!

  1. Book a stay nearby: Winter weather can be unpredictable, so avoiding a long drive in the morning will help you to have a relaxing start to your day

  2. Make time to explore Ouray: Ouray is one of my favorite mountain towns and is the perfect landing spot for your elopement weekend.

  3. Have a backup plan: Extreme weather can make some trails in the San Juan Mountains inaccessible, so be sure to communicate with your wedding team and have a back up plan in case of heavy snow.

Self-Solemnization Colorado

One of the best parts about eloping in Colorado, is you have the option to self-solemnize. What is self-solemnization? Self Solemnization is the act of getting married without a third party witness or ordained officiant. Since self-solemnization is legal in Colorado, you can head out for a hike in the mountains and come back married, just the two of you!

For instructions on how to self-solemnize, check out my full guide on everything you need to know about self-solemnization in Colorado.

I had so much fun documenting Delia and Scott’s intimate elopement in Colorado. Their ceremony in the San Juan mountains was breathtaking and made for such a beautiful wedding day.  If you’re looking to plan your own elopement in the San Juan mountains or another destination in Colorado, I would love to be a part of it!  Reach out via my contact page and we can start planning.
